Massage therapy/acupuncture are NOT covered by MSI, the provincial health plan.
All plans are unique so we recommend contacting your insurance provider for details of your coverage and to determine whether direct billing is an option for you.
A referral is not necessary to visit a massage therapist or acupuncturist however, if you are claiming massage therapy/acupuncture under an extended health care plan you may require a physician’s referral or other specific criteria for coverage. Check your individual policy to determine your type of coverage.
You can visit your family doctor or you can just go to walk in clinic to get a referral. For Dalhousie and SMU student, you can go to your school clinic to get one.
For Blue Cross, the massage therapy/acupuncture referral is effective for 1 years from the date you get the referral. For other insurance company, it is effective for one year from your last treatment.
The health history you complete will help your therapist provide a safe and effective treatment. There are certain drugs and health conditions that may affect your treatment session from what techniques can be used to how you lie on the table. All the information you provide is confidential so discuss any concerns you have with your therapist.
The 60-minute Massage Therapy/Acupuncture treatment includes 5-15 minutes of consultation and cloth changing and 45-55 minutes of hands-on service which depends on different conditions.
